Blue cranes in the Bitou Valley near Plettenberg Bay

The ocean off the coast of Plett is a vibrant world full of life that never ceases to amaze — playful dolphins leaping through the waves and majestic whales breaching the surface. On land, the Bitou Valley shines with a rich variety of birds, making it a perfect spot for nature lovers.

Dolphins: year-round residents

Dolphins are celebrated for their playfulness and intelligence, and they can be spotted along the coast throughout the year, with activity peaking in the warmer months when food is plentiful. Boat tours from Plettenberg Bay give you an up-close look — guests on a recent tour counted more than twenty dolphins swimming alongside the boat.

Whales: seasonal spectacles

Whale watching is highly seasonal. Southern Right Whales are visible from June to November, while Humpback Whales can be seen from May to November. Local operators report sighting success rates of over 85% in peak season — and seeing a humpback breach is a sight that stays with you.

Bird life in the Bitou Valley

The Bitou Valley is a treasure trove for birdwatchers, with wetlands, forest and coastal habitats supporting a wide range of species — including the famous Knysna Turaco (Loerie) after which one of our suites is named. Guided birdwatching outings often turn up as many as thirty species in a few hours.

For the best viewing, head for the nature walks and reserves around the valley. Bring binoculars and a field guide and you can easily spend hours identifying calls and movements in the canopy.

Howberry Hills: the perfect retreat

Howberry Hills offers a selection of accommodation, from charming rooms to luxury glamping. Glamping is a favourite among guests — waking in a well-furnished tent surrounded by the sounds of the valley, with cosy bedding and modern comforts, is the outdoors without the compromise.

The lodge sits close to the beaches that are best for dolphin and whale watching, and right on the doorstep of prime birdwatching country in the Bitou Valley — a comfortable base for whichever kind of wildlife you have come to see.

Whether you are planning to see the migration of the whales or to enjoy the dolphins that are here all year, the Bitou Valley and Howberry Hills are ready for your exploring.
